Community Core

Based on principles of community-based participatory research, IFH partners with numerous organizations in New Jersey and across the United States to work to improve population health in synchrony.

The significance of partnering with communities to promote the conduct of relevant research with high community impact is well recognized and documented. There are many challenges to working with minority communities including: 1) Minority older persons have been reluctant to participate in government sponsored research, and sustainable community support has been scant; 2) there is incomplete enumeration at the local level of minority persons in the community and these data are not often separated by ethnic groups making any nuanced interpretation challenging; and 3) there are marked linguistic and cultural barriers that make population-based studies challenging. Over the past decades, we have been focused on improving knowledge, education and access to preventive health services and treatments, and cultural competency for the care of minority populations through community-based participatory research and partnering directly with key, trusted community organizations and stakeholders.
