Dr. Mark Olfson, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, is a mental health services researcher and Research Psychiatrist at Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute. He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, completed psychiatric residency training at Yale University School of Medicine and then completed an NIH post-doctoral research fellowship in mental health services research at Rutgers/Princeton. For the past 19 years, he has been on the full-time faculty of the Department of Psychiatry of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University. Dr. Olfsonís research interests focus on patterns and trends in the utilization of mental health services and quality of care with an emphasis on the treatment of patients with depression and other severe mental disorders. He currently directs federally-funded research studies on the safety and effectiveness of antipsychotic, antidepressants, and stimulants in the treatment of common mental disorders in adults and children. He has published over 260 papers and has consulted to the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Psychiatric Institute for Research & Education. Dr. Olfson currently serves as Co-Director of the AHRQ Center for Education and Research on Mental Health Therapeutics and as the Scientific Director of TeenScreen, a national organization devoted to expanding the availability of voluntary mental health screening of adolescents.
