Lisa Mikesell, Ph.D.
Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research
Assistant Professor, School of Communication and Information

lisa.mikesell@rutgers.edu, (848) 932-8778

Lisa Mikesell is an assistant professor in the School of Communication and Information. She uses mixed methods to investigate the communication and social practices in a variety of health and mental health contexts. Much of her work examines the situated communication practices of individuals diagnosed with neurological and psychiatric disorders to provide a grounded perspective on everyday functioning and community participation and to critically consider conceptualizations and measurements of (in)competence and everyday functioning. She uses similar approaches to examine clinical work practices and consider applications of patient-centeredness and shared decision making. She also studies the processes of community engaged participatory research (CBPR) exploring practices of outreach, stakeholder engagement and CBPR research ethics. Collectively, her work informs understandings of best practices, intervention development and implementation and therefore contains a strong applied component, particularly to inquiry in health services.
