Stephen Crystal Awarded 2017 Rutgers Grant in Big Data Analytics

Stephen Crystal has been awarded funding from the 2017 Rutgers Grant Awards in Big Data Analytics Program, a new internal competitive grant program to support research in Big Data Analytics at Rutgers University. Dr. Crystal’s project “Opioid Use Disorders and Medication Assisted Treatment among Medicaid Beneficiaries” will implement pilot analyses needed to support federal funding applications for research on the use and outcomes of medication assisted treatment for opioid use disorders among Medicaid beneficiaries in New Jersey and nationally.

This project serves the longer-term goal of developing a robust, externally funded program of research engaging a multidisciplinary team of researchers across Rutgers in addressing the critical public health challenges associated with the opioid use disorders epidemic. With opioid use disorders and overdose deaths steadily rising, improving treatment is a critically important public health challenge. Addressing gaps in evidence needed to inform these initiatives is critical.

The Rutgers Grant Awards in Big Data Analytics are intended to foster the creation of viable data-intensive, multidisciplinary research collaborations that will enable research teams to compete effectively for external support in areas related to big data analytics. A total of eight grants was awarded. The competition was sponsored by the Rutgers Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED), Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), Office of the Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer and the Rutgers Institute for Data Science, Learning, and Applications (I-DSLA). I-DSLA is a Rutgers-wide, NSF-designated Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) site.
