Team Science Initiative Awards to the Institute for Health

A Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) Team Science Award to Dr. Stephen Crystal will establish the Rutgers Center of Excellence on Evidence-Based Mental Health Treatment for Children and Youth. A multidisciplinary team at the Institute for Health with the Department of Psychiatry, UBHC and School of Social Work will conduct key pilot work to focus on treatment of foster care youth with serious mental health problems, especially externalizing disorders leading to challenging, aggressive behavior treated with antipsychotic medications at very high rates, often absent appropriate mental health services. A secondary focus concerns treatment of the broader Medicaid population of youth with externalizing disorders. Public-academic partnerships are needed where strong stakeholder interest exists in bringing university-based analytic expertise, quality and outcomes measurement, comparative effectiveness and translation of evidence-based practices to systems of care.

Dr. Crystal is also an investigator on a second RBHS Team Science Initiative Award, Creation of the Rutgers Cancer Health Services Research Consortium headed by Grace L. Lu-Yao, PhD, MPH, Professor of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology. This award will support a pilot patient interview in the Cancer Registry while creating new opportunities for cancer health services research and collaboration between the Institute for Health and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The RBHS Team Science Initiative (TSI) grant program fosters the creation of viable multi-disciplinary research teams to examine complex, multi-faceted biomedical research questions with the intent of enabling these research teams to compete effectively for extramural grant support.
