David Mechanic Receives the Adam Yarmolinsky Medal from the IOM

David Mechanic was presented the Adam Yarmolinsky Medal at the 38th annual meeting of the Institute of Medicine on October 13th. The Medal is given to an IOM member from a discipline outside the health and medical sciences. The IOM refers to Mechanic as "the ‘dean of medical sociology’ for his precocious, prolific and profound contributions over the past five decades that have helped to build as well as define the field of sociology of medicine and significantly influence the fields of mental and physical health. His advocacy has helped to bring sociology into the forums influencing health policy. He has written or edited numerous publications in medical sociology, health policy, health services research, and the social and behavioral sciences in addition to carrying out research and providing valuable service to the scientific community. Mechanic has also been an exemplary professional colleague, teacher, and mentor fostering the education, training, professional socialization, and career development of a multitude of social scientists of health and health services – a number of whom have been elected to the IOM and the National Academy of Sciences. David Mechanic is one of the IOM’s earliest non-health members, elected to membership in 1971.”
