Nancy Scotto-Rosato Receives Dissertation Award

Assistant Research Professor Nancy Scotto-Rosato received the 2007 Distinguished Dissertation Award from the Rutgers School of Social Work. Her dissertation, "Factors Associated with Adolescents' Mental Health Access and Patterns of Utilization" used data from Wave I and Wave II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to examine barriers to children and adolescents accessing mental health services. Results showed a large gap between mental health need and the use of acute and continuing services by children and adolescents. Especially noteworthy were that African-American youth living in urban and poor areas were less likely to obtain continued care. African-American, Hispanic, and poor youth were more likely to obtain care at school than at other sites. The central role of schools in providing mental health services has strong policy implications.
