Postdoctoral Position Available at the Center for Health Beliefs and Behavior

The Center for Health Beliefs and Behavior at Rutgers University in collaboration with the Departments of Medicine and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, is seeking a post-doctoral fellow for behavioral research related to cancer control. The position is for a minimum of two years with opportunities for extension and advancement contingent upon the development of the individualís research program. Candidates can develop behavioral studies on a wide range of topics ranging from prevention through detection and adaptation to treatment and post treatment adjustment and behavior. Topics currently under development by behavioral and clinical faculty involve adaptation to treatment by elderly patients, predicting tolerance to chemotherapy treatment by patients and physicians, concerns about cancer recurrence by patients treated for prostate and colon cancers, mental models of cancer and their relationship to preventive behavior, use of alternative treatments, and communication and sharing models by physicians, nurses, patients and family members. These issues are also being addressed in other chronic conditions, e.g., diabetes and hypertension, and there will be opportunities to share interests with and develop collaborative programs with academic faculty at Rutgers and clinical faculty at The Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine.

By time of hire, applicants should have completed a PhD degree in a discipline such as Social or Clinical Health Psychology, Medical Sociology, or an MD degree with additional training in the behavioral sciences. Skill and experience in data analysis (linear and logistic models using SPSS and/or SAS), familiarity with the basis of Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation modeling will be critical for success, and background in cognitive science and the psychology of emotion will be of special value. The candidate selected for this position will participate in seminars and teaching sessions at the Center for Health Beliefs and Behavior at Rutgers, the Department of Medicine, the Cancer Institute, and the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research and will be assisted with developing their own research agenda and grant proposals.
