Regulatory Reform and Angiography Disparities

Professor Joel Cantor, Director of the Institute's Center for State Health Policy, has received a three year award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to examine the impact of hospital regulatory reforms in New Jersey that concurrently addresed racial and ethnic disparities in the use of cardiac angiography. This research will also evaluate how local health system characteristics and competition among hospitals influence cardiac angiography disparities and how the New Jersey regulation may have reduced the disparities. Case studies will be conducted with hospitals serving high proportions of minority clients and those facilities serving lower proportions of these groups. Promising strategies for reducing disparities in the use of cardiac angiography will also be sought. Research findings will be translated to the practice and policy communities through "best practices."
